Can You Help Bring a Historic Building Back to Life?
The historic building on the corner of Upper Sturt and Sturt Valley Roads is owned by the Upper Sturt Soldiers’ Memorial Hall.
The building is well over 100 years old, has ‘good bones’ and was moved to its present location in about 1915.
The building was the Upper Sturt Post Office for over half a century from 1917 or thereabouts, and then used as a residence for many years.
After a great deal of discussion, the USSMH Committee has decided to repair the Old Post Office and make it usable again for small meetings, displays and the like.
The work will be done with the help of volunteers- cleaning, painting, assisting with installing cupboards, donations etc, and selected use of tradies.
We would love to hear from you if you can help in any way to bring the old building back to life.
Work has commenced on repairing and making usable the Old Post Office (OPO).
Following a detailed inspection of the building, a new roof was rated top priority with the onset of winter and the need to keep the interior dry. Local identity and tradie Richard, and his brother Rob, have completed putting a new roof on the OPO. Great work and very much appreciated, and as it turns out, just in time for the first big rains of winter! They are now turning their attention to inside repairs with assistance from Complete Joinery of Crafers.
Ben of Fisher Air and Electrical Scott Creek is providing very much needed help with the electrical aspects of the OPO project. Crowies is providing advice on painting the exterior and interior plus generous donations of paint. Help with the plumbing work for the project is being contributed by long-time supporter of the USSMH, Andrew Evans Plumbing. And many people have volunteered to paint the OPO, help with repairs and provide items to refurbish the rooms.
Progress is definitely being made on bringing the OPO back to life. There is still much to be done in addition to the building work. This includes improving access, landscaping and replacing the old fence. The generosity of many in terms of volunteering time, their expertise, funding and donations of items and equipment is amazing and is vital to the success of the OPO project. The Hall Committee is deeply appreciative of all these contributions.
